  • Overview & Essential Job Functions

    Position Summary:


    The Senior Staff Accountant reports directly to the Assistant Controller and is responsible for financial reporting, general accounting activity related to the month-end closing process, variance analysis, annual audit, and related duties as assigned.


    Essential Job Functions:

    • Provide daily Cash Position reporting and record related entries
    • Account for Fixed Assets used in the business timely and accurately – these include trucks, leasehold improvements, land, etc.
    • Responsible for closing month end by day 4 and perform analysis to ensure that all material entries are booked correctly
    • Prepare filing of Fed and State forms for excise (fuel, sales/use and property amongst others) taxes according to government required deadlines
    • Generate monthly reports that are included in the monthly reporting binder
    • Review and record inventory activity captured in Dossier (maintenance system) monthly in the GL. Assure consistency between Dossier and general ledger.
    • Post required allocation entries per the master close schedule
    • Post all monthly entries related to the each business unit
    • Provide all information needed for the annual audit
    • Complete account reconciliations by day 15 of each month accurately and make related adjusting entries as needed; individual reconciling items should be cleared at most 60 days after creation unless independent documentation supports a longer period
    • Look for process improvement opportunities, considering evolving system needs, and make recommendations to manager; implement process improvements as per agreed schedule
    • Perform ad hoc tasks as needed
    • Create and maintain desktop procedures
    • Book any accruals as needed working closely with the business partners (i.e. bins, labor, workers comp, profit sharing, etc.)
    • Ensure related party transactions are captured correctly and are easily identifiable for elimination for consolidation purposes
    • Account for loans and related interest expenses correctly
    • Use project accounting module in Infinium to track spending and provide reporting that ties to the monthly capital spend


    Role expectations: 

    In support of the Athens Services mission and both internal and external stakeholders (internal: other teams the accounting team works with; external: banks, Fed/State governments) the Senior Accountant performs a variety of tasks and accountabilities surrounding its technical specialty.  In addition to technical specialty, essential behaviors are critical to success in the role: partnership/teamwork, innovation/continuous improvement, and business awareness/understanding.  It is expected that the Senior Accountant will maintain the necessary technical skills and business knowledge to improve processes in their area.  The accountant works with other teams across the business to assure that his/her input is incorporated business-wide so that all improvements are delivered across all affected functions simultaneously. 

    Qualifications & Environmental Demands

    Required Qualifications:


    • Bachelor's degree in accounting and/or finance.
    • 3 - 5 years of experience in an accounting or finance role.
    • Proven senior accounting experience.
    • Thorough knowledge of basic accounting procedures and principles.
    • Awareness of business trends.
    • Experience with creating financial statements.
    • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process.
    • Excellent accounting software user and administration skills.
    • Accuracy and attention to detail.
    • Aptitude for numbers and quantitative skills.
    • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
    • Ability to perform physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodations. 

    Preferred Qualifications: 

    • Master’s Degree
    • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
    • Waste industry experience
